7 Helpful Moving Tips

Whether you have moved several times or are moving for the first time, it is always a large task that requires a lot of time and attention. While some people are planners and creating checklists comes naturally, others may have more difficulty. If you think moving is a hassle and dread moving day, these tips will help you discover that with a good game plan, packing and moving can be efficient and run much smoother than you think.

1. Create a Checklist of To-Do’s
The first step before moving is to create a master checklist of all the important tasks you need to get done. You can even schedule a timeline of the dates you want to accomplish each task. This can include informing your work, doctor, or your child’s school of your move, and changing your forwarding address at the post office.

2. Take Inventory
As you pack, makes sure you keep track of all your important and valuable possessions. Having a list of everything you own will ensure that you don’t forget or aren’t missing anything when you unpack.

3. Packing Supplies

  • Bubble wrap
  • Moving boxes – different sizes
  • Packing tape
  • Box packing paper
  • Sticky notes or labels (for labeling boxes)
  • Stretch wrap

Also, take advantage of using suitcases, hampers or other plastic storage containers to help reduce the amount of boxes used. Rolling suitcases are also easier to move than boxes. To create more space and move clothes easier, vacuum seal your clothes that are out of season.

4. Prioritize What to Pack First
When you begin packing, start with the items you don’t use often. Also, make sure that belongings you need for the trip are in your carry-on bag such as important documents, purse, wallet, necessities for children or pets, etc.

5. Organize Like a Pro
Pack boxes according to each room, so that the boxes won’t be all over the house in disarray. Also, keep zip locks handy for odds and ends that need a place to go such as screws, curtain rods, electronic cords and chargers, and other small items.

6. Use Up Perishable Items
Rather than buying new cleaning supplies or food, use what you have a month or two prior to the move so that you will have less to pack. Once you move into your new place, then you can buy new items you need.

7. Sell or Donate Old Items
The fewer items you have to move, the easier it is on you. Not only does donating or selling your items create more space, but also will help give you a fresh start in your new home. Eliminate clutter by going through your home and making piles of items that you no longer use. Then determine which items you want to get rid of, sell or donate. If you are too busy to have a garage sale, the Internet makes it easy to sell unwanted valuables on eBay or Craigslist.

Don’t make your move harder than it needs to be. Take advantage of all the helpful resources on the Internet, create a Pinterest board, and discover how moving can be made more organized and simple.
