The Key to a Stress-Free Moving Day

resting after a hard day of movingWhat’s the best way to ensure that your moving day is as stress free as possible? Plan ahead. The more you have figured out ahead of time, the more relieved you’ll be once the day finally comes. Start planning at least two months ahead of time to be sure you don’t forget anything. Here’s how to make your moving day as smooth as possible:

Get Rid of What You Don’t Want

One of the best moving tips we can give you is to declutter. Having too much stuff to deal with is often what makes moving so stressful and expensive. You can sell, store, donate, or toss anything you don’t want anymore or won’t have room for.

DIY or Hire Help?

Decide whether you’ll want to try and move by yourself/with friends or hire a moving company. If you don’t have a truck, have a lot of items to move, or simply don’t want to do it, a moving company may be the best option for you. An added bonus to hiring help: your belongings are insured. If something happens to anything during the move, you’ll be compensated.

Make a Budget

Once you’ve decided if you want to do the work yourself or hire someone, you can start making a budget and saving for the big move. Your budget should include supplies, gas, the cost of renting a truck, the cost of a moving company, and some extra money for unexpected costs.

Book Movers/Trucks ASAP

Compare costs of different moving companies around you and find out what’s included with their services. Find a moving company you like? Book as soon as possible—especially if you’re moving in the summer.

The same goes for renting a truck. You don’t want to be counting on a rental truck for your moving day only to find out that they booked all of their trucks last week. Be sure to take care of this at least a few weeks in advance.

Get Packing Supplies

You’ll probably need more boxes or packing tape or packing paper than you think. Be sure to get a little extra of everything just in case. Want to save money? Check your local liquor stores, grocery stores, coffee shops for free boxes on their delivery days.

Change Your Address

If you want to be sure you don’t miss any mail, be sure to change your address and set up your mail to be forwarded to your new address. You can easily do this on the USPS website. Do this at least two weeks before your moving date.

Set Up Utilities

Arrange for your current utilities, cable, water, and Internet to be shut off when you move. Set up to have your new utilities (and etc…) turned on before you start moving in.

Come Up With a Label System

Before you start packing, come up with a label system to make unpacking much easier. Maybe you number for each box and keep a list of what’s in each numbered box. Or you could print out labels for each room. Color-coding works well, too!
