Woman holding a cardboard boxMoving is stressful. Not only are you worried about your new destination, but you also have to worry about everything included in your current home. From silverware to clothing and more – the list never seems to end.

5 Moving Tips You Need To Know

While stresses can build up, they can be avoided. We have compiled a list of the 5 top moving tips that will help you have a stress free moving day.

1. Pack an Overnight Bag

You never know what you’re going to encounter on moving day. By packing an overnight bag, you’ll be prepared for anything. Pack your essentials, including:

  • Change of clothes
  • Laptop
  • Phone and other electronics chargers
  • Toiletries

Valuables are also another thing to include. If you have a family heirloom that you don’t want to leave your sight, keep it in this bag.

After a long day of moving, this bag will help save you from digging through box after box to find what you need. You’ll have everything you need to have a good night’s sleep and attack unpacking the next day.

2. Wrap Breakables in Clothes to Save Money & Space

Nothing is worse than running out of packing supplies last minute. Rather than racing out to the store, use your clothes. Using your clothes as a buffer between breakables, you can save both space and money.

You can use shirts to wrap around plates or stuff socks in between breakables for added cushion. This is a free, fast, and easy packing supply alternative that can be a great aid in packing your fragile belongings.

3. Label Each Box With it’s Contents and Location

As we’ve covered in our beginner’s guide to packing, it is important to label your boxes. Labeling your boxes can be accomplished in many different ways. Many of our customers utilize the effective color coding system, but if that doesn’t appeal to you, don’t fret.

A simple way to keep your boxes as organized as possible on moving day, simply label what is in each box and where it’s going. For example, label boxes filled with dishware as “Plates & Cups – Kitchen”.

This is not only beneficial to you, but also to your movers. This simple tip will help you get your belongings in the right place – fast.

4. Make Your Belongings Work For You

Have a lot of baskets, suitcases, and bags? Rather than just tossing them in the truck as-is, make them work for you. Fill them up with clothes, books, and other belongings.

This is a cost-effective and smart way to pack your stuff – especially when you’re in a rush. Remember to still label these belongings. Use duct tape and a permanent marker to keep your belongings intact, but also organized.

5. Hire a Pet Sitter or Babysitter

Moving day is hard enough as it is. To make moving day a little easier, hire a pet or babysitter. You’ll be able to move without any interruptions from children or pets. You’ll have a clear head and will be able to focus on making the house a home so your children and pets won’t be overwhelmed by the transition.

The small cost of a sitter on moving day will provide you the peace of mind knowing that your loved ones are safe and out of harm’s way.
